The next Association Meeting is September 27 2010, 7:00 PM at the Salvation Army Little Pine Island Lake camp
Overview of Association meeting on 09/27/2010:

It was nice that Bill Byl of the drain commission took the time to come to the association meeting. but the information provided by Bill did not seem to answer the question about the fluctuating lake level other than the expected, lack of imagination answer, that we drill wells and pump water into the lake when it gets low.
I felt empty by his answers so I went home and prayed to God for the solution. God answered me by pointing to water conservation and watershed management as the long term solution.
God also gave me the answer to the complaint that I cut off a critical water supply to the lake when I filled in the man made ditch that caused flooding on my property.
God told me to look to the 1940 lake map that can be found at the following link: http://www.dnr.state.mi.us/SPATIALDATALIBRARY/PDF_MAPS/INLAND_LAKE_MAPS/KENT/LITTLE_PINE_ISLAND_LAKE.PDF
If you zoom in on this map where the lake drain is you will see a little arrow pointing toward the lake. What this means is that in March of 1940, when this map was made, the water, in what is now the "lake drain"  flowed into the lake not out of the lake. The wetland behind my house that runs along Ketchel would supply water to the lake until 1963 when the drain commission installed the dam on hass that cut off this important supply of water and water management source to the lake. I believe the lake association and all the residents of Little Pine Island Lake should be working to reclaim this important source of water for the lake.
The drain commission does not have the answer because his job is to drain the water away, not conserve it.
I know Dave Hood and Phil Helzer have been working to increase drainage in the area, when you drain water from the area you are draining the water from our lake. I believe you should stop seeking better drainage from the lake area, draining the area around the lake is draining the lake The Association should look to raising roads and homes in the area to better deal with the water.
I will go into my plans for other watershed management projects later, this is enough to digest for now.

Regards
Randy DuBois
Lake Association member since 2010

Nate Karsten, Professional Lake Management -2011 Review

The cost of lake weed management in on your tax bill through Plainfield township, every lake property owner pays about $100.00 per year if your a Lake Assoc. member or not, your paying for this service brought to you by the Lake Assoc.
I question this service.

The report given by PLM (professional Lake Management) was quite vague. Next years projected lake management cost is $5,000 to $8,000,  that's a good chunk of change.
What are we getting form the cost?  Has there been competitive bidding?  How many chemicals are they putting the lake? What is the long term effects fo these chemicals?  I've been coming to this lake for over 50 years and they never did this in the past, is the level of chemical use necessary? PLM is a for profit company so I'm sure they will do and tell what ever is necessary to keep the money machine going.
